Mount Ruang erupted

Mount Ruang erupted on 18 April.
What are the impacts on tourism?
How did the eruption affect Singapore?
How did the government manage the disaster risks?
Why was there a fear of a tsunami from the volcanic eruption?

The following active volcanoes featured below are located near Singapore. How will volcanic eruptions affect Singapore?

The intensity of Mt Ruang’s eruptions and the amount of material ejected were comparable to the 2010 eruptions of Mt Merapi, Indonesia’s most volatile volcano located 2,000km away in Java, which killed 353 people. Yet, no lives were lost during Mt Ruang’s eruptions despite the relatively short window for the island’s inhabitants to evacuate. Community resilience in terms of preparedness played an important part.

In a notice on its website, the park said some tourists were injured on its trails, which had been damaged to different degrees by the quake and continued to be hit by tremors.

Since the quake struck, more than 25 tremors (aftershocks) measuring at least 4.5-magnitude have been detected within 50km of Hualien City, according to the US Geological Survey.

During the park’s closure, roads and trails will be repaired and the safety of the area will be assessed.
