The Johor tremor was likely caused by stress release along a minor fault within the Sunda Plate.

The Sunda Plate is a tectonic plate located in South-east Asia. It comprises Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and parts of the South China Sea and Andaman Sea.

Refer to the following on the faultlines in Malaysia and Singapore.

A third earthquake in four days rattled Malaysia’s Johor state on Wednesday 27 Aug morning, unsettling assumptions that the country is shielded from seismic activity and prompting calls for greater disaster preparedness.

Wednesday’s tremor, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake, struck at 8.59am. Its epicentre was located 18km (11 miles) south of Segamat town at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles), according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

Wednesday’s tremor followed two earthquakes on Sunday 24 Aug: a magnitude 4.1 one that struck Segamat at 6.13am, and a 2.8-magnitude quake at 9am in Kluang, 28km (17.4 miles) northwest of the town.

Does the presence of hot spring in Singapore indicate tectonic activity?

Updated 27 Sept

The Malaysian state of Johor has been hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 on Saturday (Sep 27), the first in a month.

The earthquake occurred at about 9.04am, 25km southeast of Batu Pahat at a depth of 10km

These earthquakes serve as a reminder that Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and the surrounding region are not immune to the natural disaster that could trigger severe tremors and inflict damage to people and property, said geological experts.

There was also a tremor in 1948 felt near southern Singapore that inflicted damage to property.
