Taroko National Park will be closed until April 7 2024. The park named after its landmark gorge will be closed for five days to ensure the safety of tourists.

In a notice on its website, the park said some tourists were injured on its trails, which had been damaged to different degrees by the quake and continued to be hit by tremors.

Since the quake struck, more than 25 tremors (aftershocks) measuring at least 4.5-magnitude have been detected within 50km of Hualien City, according to the US Geological Survey.

During the park’s closure, roads and trails will be repaired and the safety of the area will be assessed.

Google AI project against Climate Change

Amazing how technology such as Google AI projects can help in mitigating and adapting to climate change.

How does technology help to mitigate and adapt to climate change?

Land

1. AnthroKrishi, utilises AI and satellite imagery to map critical information about individual farms, aiding in informed decisions around crop planting, optimising crop yields and resource usage.

2. Google's global hydrological AI model predicts floods up to 7 days in advance, even in data-scarce and vulnerable regions, helping to save countless lives.

3. Project Green Light leverage on AI to optimise traffic lights, reducing stops and emissions at intersections by up to 30% and 10%, respectively.

4. Google's AI-based tools provide real-time mapping and fire spread modelling, aiding communities in staying safe and firefighters in battling wildfires more effectively.

Sea

1. Kelp mapping Australia's giant kelp forests to aid in conservation efforts

2. Calling in Corals, a citizen science project harnessing AI to analyse underwater audio recordings to better understand and preserve coral reef ecosystems.

3. Blue Carbon project applies AI to measure the carbon-storing capacity of seagrass ecosystems

Air

1. Contrail forecast maps using Google's AI, pilots can choose routes that minimise contrail formation, reducing carbon emissions.

2. MethaneSAT use satellite data and Google AI to identify and track methane emissions.

3. Solar API uses Google's AI to help businesses estimate rooftop solar energy potential, in adopting solar energy and reducing their carbon footprint.
