Where are the agricultural areas located in Singapore?

Why is it important to develop sustainable food production in Singapore?

Read more about the next-generation kelong, an example of multi-tropic aquaculture, which is a sustainable form of farming that uses the byproducts of one species to grow or feed another. Urban neighborhood

Going to start a new category of posts for the new Upper Sec Geography.

I have taken the following photographs recently and looking at what is around us through a geographer's lens. Indeed Geography is alive and glad that this topic is made available to the students to connect to the Geography in their Everyday Life.

Did you notice the green roofs on top of the bus stops?

The plant atop the bus stop is a species of herb known as Nabhali (Cyanotis cristata), which was selected for its hardiness and ability to grow and spread well on green roofs.

The green roof can lower the surrounding temperature by 2 degree Celsius. What a cool idea!

I have posted on the bus stop with green roof earlier. http://olevelgeog.blogspot.com/2022/06/adapting-to-urban-heat.html

Mangrove in Pulau Ubin

8,000 mangrove plants to "naturally take root" at Sungei Durian in Pulau Ubin by 2026

How does the planting of mangrove plants help to mitigate climate change?

Where are most of the mangroves found in Singapore?

What has caused the loss of mangroves in the past?

Why is it important to regenerate mangrove forests?

Singapore is home to more than 30 mangrove tree species, including the Crabapple Mangrove, the Gedabu and the Api-api Jambu.

Its current supply of mangrove trees sequester more than 1.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide and continue to store more carbon every year.

Besides removing carbon and storing it, some mangroves in Singapore can absorb more than 75 per cent of the energy of incoming waves and protect the shorelines during storm surges.

This helps to protect communities from threats associated with climate change, including worsening storms, rising sea levels and erosion.

Stunting and Wasting in Asia

According to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Bank Group, more than half of all stunted children, almost half of all overweight children and more than two-thirds of all wasted children live in Asia.

What are the impacts of stunting and wasting?

How can stunting and wasting be reduced?

Sustainable tourism in Singapore

Greening businesses - Sustainable Tourism in Singapore
Sentosa is the first island destination in Asia to be certified as a sustainable tourism destination. Some of Sentosa’s most recent sustainability initiatives include the SkyHelix, the first carbon-neutral attraction on the island; the large-scale installation of solar panels to generate renewal energy; a series of nature tours aimed at inculcating in travellers a sense of respect for the natural environment; and the focus on greening MICE offerings that includes reducing disposable and increasing locally-sourced produce.

MICE in Singapore 2022

Singapore’s MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) industry is bouncing back strongly after being hit badly by the pandemic. The number of events timed to coincide with the F1 are similar to pre-Covid-19 levels, noted the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). It added that the 25 events are expected to be attended by close to 90,000 delegates.

  • The Milken Institute Asia Summit (Sept 28-30), an annual meeting of investors, business executives and others to discuss issues affecting the region.
  • The Forbes Global CEO Conference (Sept 26-27).
  • One of Singapore's largest trade shows, FHA-Food & Beverage (Sept 5-8), is also returning for the first time since the pandemic hit in 2020.

Social impacts:
The flood killed 1,700, devastated two million homes, and put a third of the nation underwater, displacing 8 million people from home.

Updated 11 Oct

At least 1,300 people were killed, and 33 million people in Pakistan have been affected. Almost 100 per cent of the district’s cotton and rice crops were destroyed. More than half its primary and secondary schools were fully or partially damaged.

Pakistan, which contributed only 0.8 per cent to the world’s emissions, now faces damages estimated at more than US$30 billion, more than 10 per cent of its GDP.

It must repair or replace two million damaged or destroyed homes, nearly 24,000 schools, nearly 1,500 health facilities and 13,000km of roads. Bridges, hotels, dams, and other structures were also swept away.

Developed nations agreed to give money to help poorer countries reduce emissions and adapt their infrastructure for future climate change, but have been slow in providing the money.
