Russia-Ukraine conflict affecting food pricing
Countries across the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa that already suffer from food insecurity are badly affected as they rely on Russia’s and Ukraine’s supplies of wheat, corn, and vegetable oil. Even before the conflict, global food prices were already at their highest point since 2011 due to droughts and heavy rainfall, as well as the supply chain disruptions created by Covid-19. With 855 million people already suffering from food insecurity, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine added to the woes of global hunger as food prices rise further.
