Net zero building
Applauding more green building, especially net zero building, which is so energy efficient that it consumes the amount of energy it produces.
One of them is the 30-year-old DBS Newton Green which has been retrofitted to include over 1,000 square metres of solar panels on its rooftop, self-powered solar air-conditioning systems, exhaust fans and lamp-posts, and a slatted exterior made of bamboo to shade the building. In addition, 10 per cent of the floor area that was previously air-conditioned has been converted to naturally ventilated spaces. This reduced the need for energy generated by burning fossil fuel which releases carbon dioxide, a green house gas, contributing to global warming. It helped to reduced the consumption of 845,000 kWh annually, which is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of about 200 four-room HDB homes in Singapore.
Watch the video below and reflect on the following questions:
Where are some of the green buildings mentioned?
How do the buildings help to mitigate climate change?
Why is there a need for more green building?
How does the building make use of architecture and technology to mitigate climate change?
